The UK has no compulsory licence or single qualification that makes you a tattoo artist, but there is a level-headed sequence that gives you the strongest footing for a career that lasts:

• Get taught the fundamentals well, preferably by working tattoo artists, across machines, needles, inks, linework, skin behaviour and safe practice.
• Sort your hygiene credentials, an Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) Level 2 qualification is the standard, and it comes built into our courses.
• Register with your local council so you are working within the law, we walk you through the whole process on the course.
• Grow a portfolio, it is consistent, cleanly healed work that earns you a chair and brings clients through the door.
• Never stop improving, the artists at the top treat their technique as a lifelong work in progress.

What you take home swings widely depending on where you are based, how experienced and quick you are, your reputation, and whether you are on a wage or self-employed, so we are not going to quote you a tidy number that does not exist.
